What is a Möbius band?

A Möbius band (or Möbius strip) is a two dimensional figure that is not a flat (plane) figure. It only has one edge and one face.

You can follow the edge or face in the image above (or in the title bar), you will end up precisely where you started.

Why the name Möbius band?

The Möbius band is named after its German inventor, August Ferdinand Möbius.

How do you create a Möbius band?

Creating a Möbius band is not at all difficult. Take a strip of paper and give it a half-twist and join the ends together with tape or glue.

Try this out yourself!

Cut a Möbius band along the center line in two. You expect to get two rings. However you will get one band with two full twists. As there are two twists instead of one, this is not a Möbius band.
Cut this result along the center line in two again. Now you will get two rings wound around each other. Both will have two full twists in them.
Cut a Möbius band along 13 of the edge. You will get two rings wound around each other. One is a Möbius band and the other is a band with two full twist, twice as long.
